Containment of World Population Growth

A Rotary Challenge?

"At the recent RI Convention there was a booth taken up by the Rotarian Action Group for Population Growth and Sustainable Development (RFPD).  I spent some time with these people as it is a subject dear to my heart and I am very keen to establish an interest in this area in our district.

"Essentially I believe the greatest problem we have at this time is not climate change but the expansion of the number of humans on our planet and the unsustainable future, if we don’t address it. Naturally the climate will be adversely affected by resources being diminished such as forest cut down, greater carbon emissions as more people demand more energy, and fish stocks exhausted etc

"People in underdeveloped countries have more children and less ability to take proper care of them .Consequently the appeals to Rotary,  Salvation Army and all those charities throughout the world are in an unwinnable battle. Further many crises occurring at this time have their origins directly or indirectly in family strains and power seeking- larger families mean more children adversely affected.

"Could I ask any Rotary members to contact me so I can evaluate the interest across the District to doing something concrete in this direction? Also would they indicate whether they attended the RFPD booth at the convention. There is already a good deal of interest in this subject in the UK and Belinda Gates is involved too.I have the makings of a presentation to help things along."
