ROTARY: BE THE INSPIRATION
"Do what you love in the service of people who love what you do" Steve Farber of extreme Leadership

My Friends in Rotary,

Greetings from Hamburg Germany where John and I and 30 other District 9685 Rotarians are enjoying the 2019 International Convention.

June is Fellowship month and the last 3 days have been a positive example of Rotary Fellowship. Rotarians from 200 countries are greeting each other with hugs and handshakes, renewing old friendships and making new ones.

On Monday the second plenary session focussed on Leadership and Integrity. Two of the most important aspects of a Rotarians work. I would encourage you to look at the presentations on the RI website. The standout speaker for me this morning was Daniel Flynn from Thank You products. Daniel was inspiring talking about how he and 2 friends started their business and how they have changed the way young entrepreneurs are accepted by the business world I am sure every Australian in the huge hall with seating for 10,000 was proud to be an Aussie that morning.

In the afternoon in Hamburg in the heart of the city local Hamburg Rotary and Rotaract Clubs had stalls promoting the End Polio Now campaign and there were some innovative ideas. I received a little gift pack of bandaids in an End Polio Now packets. Another project is the collection of soft drink plastic bottle caps. These are sold a manufacturer and the proceeds given to the End Polio Now fund. I urge all our clubs To please make a donation to the campaign.

Congratulations the Rotary Clubs of North Ryde and Epping on the sponsoring of the Rotaract Club of Macquarie University. A huge Rotary Welcome to the new Rotaract members.

May 2019 has been a busy month for clubs as this year’s presidents work to complete their goals and the incoming teams work on their goals.

As this is my last DGs newsletter I would like to thank everyone for the Inspirational work you have done this year. I invite you to come to District Changeover to celebrate the 2018/19 year and ring in the 2019/20 year.

POLIO UPDATE
Following news of two further wild polio virus cases in Pakistan, I am pleased to forward the following in depth Polio campaign comments from three of our outstanding international leaders and commentators – including inspirational words and encouragement from Bill Gates.

We now have 24 confirmed cases of polio this year – seven in Afghanistan and 17 in Pakistan – all as a result of the ongoing hostilities along the border between the two countries.

When you read the attachments, you will really understand the difficulty of the situation and the bravery of our volunteers.

Bill Gates leaves no doubt on the absolute vital nature of ongoing support from Rotary – along with his commitment.

So please focus on encouraging end of year support from your Rotary clubs.  Let’s ensure a high percentage of clubs honour the request from RI President Barry Rassin for clubs to contribute $1,500 each in a special ‘one off’ donation this year.

I am pleased to provide the information contained in the attachments.  I believe the three pieces provide ALL the answers and I urge you to share with your Rotary clubs – and suggest they publish same in their club newsletters over a three week period.
