“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched-they must be felt with the heart” Helen Keller
My Friends in Rotary,
November is Rotary Foundation Month and I encourage you al to make the Rotary Foundation a feature of your activities this month.
The Rotary Foundation enables Rotary clubs around the world to enrich the lives of everyone, recipient and giver alike. I hope to see many of you at the Rotary Foundation Dinner on Monday 26 November at The Waterview Restaurant, Bicentennial Park where we will have the opportunity to hear from Immediate Past Rotary International President Ian Riseley. Please join with Rotarians from both Sydney districts to celebrate all that is wonderful about the Rotary Foundation.
I am looking forward to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody on Thursday night at the Mt Vic Flixs with the Upper Blue Mountains clubs. I hope many of you will attend the movie events that have been planned around the District to support he End Polio program. We are extremely lucky that movie distributors and theatres make these films available to Rotary clubs for fundraising and awareness creation. Please support this venture if you can.
The relief work and fundraising for Drought affected regions of NSW and Qld continues to be a focus for many Rotary clubs. The efforts are just amazing, and I congratulate all Rotarians in the district whoa re putting in the time towards helping our fellow Australians whoa re having a very difficult time with no end in sight. Many clubs have taken trips to the country to deliver money, stock feed and water to farmers and communities in need. I have been amazed at the stories of assistance and friendship that I have been hearing during my club visits. The trips to country towns to spend money in the business’s, to visit the tourist attractions and to mingle with the locals does a huge amount to keep the local economies growing. The moral support given is immeasurable. It is really a win win situation.
I notice that many of our District programs have extended their closing dates for applications and I encourage every club to please be mindful that for our programs to work we need participants, but the organisers also need time to put things together to ensure that we do provide a quality program.
The movement to grow Rotaract in the District has gained momentum and I thank all the clubs that are banding together to try and make R I President Barry’s dream of more vibrant Rotaract clubs a reality. It might happen slowly, but it will happen.
District Conference to be held in March 2019 in Newcastle has received sponsorship in the form of a grant from the Newcastle City Council. The Conference Committee is working hard to ensure that we all have a great time and that we show Newcastle that Rotary Rocks. The early bird registrationclosing on 30 November 2018 that closing date cannot be extended. John and I are looking forward to sharing Rotary with you at this great event. I encourage you to register this month and join us in Newcastle!
In closing this month, I would like to congratulate everyone in the District for the fantastic effort that has been put into the Drought Relief along with all of the other amazing programs and activities that are occurring. It makes me extremely proud to represent the Rotarians of our District.
Bookings for our wonderful celebration of our Rotary Foundation on Monday 26th November are coming in steadily now. It would be great to have a record attendance of D9685 and D9675 Rotarians, partners, and friends at our dinner with Past Rotary International President Ian Riseley as our Guest Speaker. PRIP Ian will also make a very special presentation to a Sydney based recipient of a Peace award which is only awarded in the year to one person world wide.
Bookings are closing in just over 2 weeks on Sunday 18 November and we would appreciate getting your table bookings NO LATER than Monday 12 November. Our numbers needs to be finalised for the catering, so I urge you to get those table bookings in for your club as soon as possible. And for those of you coming individually we look forward to you registering as soon as possible now.
Having a consistent brand image is important to all organisations, Rotary is no exception. In 2013, a new logo & brand image pack was developed, this was to ensure every club, in every district across the world could have the same high standard of brand recognition.
Over the past few months, we have been completing health checks, and it is very noticeable that there a lot of old style graphics being used in various publications, including newsletters & flyers, and hardware items, such as banners. Could all clubs please check all of their clubs portfolio, and make the correct changes. When posting anything on social media, or submitting items to the District newsletter, please make sure they are updated.
I have reviewed the proposed resolutions put forward by districts around the world. Our district, through Central Blue Mountains Rotary proposed the resolution regarding capturing volunteer time on administration and fundraising.
The results of the vote will be known in late November.
David Cook and I participated in the Council on Legislation sessions at Institute. It was good practice and worth listening to the proposals put forward by other districts and the RI Board. Our district put forward two proposed enactments.
Basically the Council on Resolutions manages recommendations to the Board to change policies set out in the Code of Policies.
The Council on Legislation acts as the parliamentary body and votes on bylaw and constitutional changes.
One Rotarian from every district forms part of the Council. Currently we vote on resolutions every year and on enactments once every three years.
On behalf of D9685 I have currently voted on the 2018 Council on Resolutions

The International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians (IFCR) is one of the most popular of all Rotary Fellowships with a membership now touching 1350. Melbourne has the honour of hosting this festival from January 20 next year. We will follow in the footsteps of previous festivals in Christchurch (2017), Nottingham (2014), Vapi in India (2012), Durban (2010), Colombo (2007) and Hunter Valley (2004). Registrations include 185 players from 9 countries and 85 non-players. Cricket games will be played at Caulfield Park and East Caulfield Reserve from Monday January 21 through to Friday January 25. On Wednesday 23 there will be a game at the spiritual home of Australian IFCR at Strath Creek which is 70k from Melbourne. A novel feature of this festival is that players will play in mixed teams. The spirit of cricket and the fellowship of Rotary will be assured across all competing countries. The Opening Dinner at the MCG on Sunday night January 20 will have one of Australia’s leading sports commentators as guest speaker. The Friday night Closing Dinner will feature leading cabaret performer, Marney McQueen. All in all, it will be a great week of cricket, fun, entertainment and fellowship.
