ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
Before we begin the newsletter, we would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of this land – the Aboriginal people past and present.
It is upon their ancestral lands where we are today.
As we share our knowledge, Rotary practices and ideas, through this newsletter and all of our activities, may we also pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country.

SEPTEMBER IS....
DISTRICT 9685 CONFERENCE 2021

The Rock the Boat Conference 2021 is coming fast.

Although not a lot has been written about it, a team of dedicated Rotarians have been working towards this Conference with a difference. DG David's hopes were to have a Conference on a cruise ship for three days. However, after plans were well underway, they were dashed.
New plans had to be constructed and a different direction needed to be taken. Uncertainty about the conditions under which the world will be existing in March 2021 still reigns currently.

What is Happening?   A Virtual Conference.
When?  Saturday, 13th to Sunday 14th March, 2021
How?   By pre-recorded, professionally prepared webinars or Zoom links for each session over the two days
How Can you participate?  Individually at home; in a group at someone's home; in a group at a venue
Cost? Clubs have been asked to contribute $5 per Club member to defray the cost of the professional production of the sessions. Otherwise, there is no cost to members.
Are there any more details? The closer we get to the Conference, the more details that will be added to the Conference description. In the meantime, you can see what is available now at:
What do you have to do?
  1. REGISTER to get the links for the Conference.
  2. Help prepare a 3-5 minute video for your Club about what you have been doing. This is a competition which has two categories - 1. Large Club, and 2. Small Club. The Prize for each category is a PHF for the Club to award to whomever they choose. The best 10 will be shown throughout the Conference with the winner announced during the Conference, complete with a virtual presentation of the prizes. Closing date for the videos to be submitted is 31st January, 2021.

WORLD POLIO DAY
24 October is World Polio Day!
World Polio Day is a time for Rotarians and Rotaractors across the globe to raise awareness about our work to eradicate polio for good. If we stay committed to making progress, polio will be the second human disease ever to be eradicated.
The End Polio Ride The Train will be held on 23rd October if at all possible.

KURRAJONG /NORTH RICHMOND SIGN

A GREAT ROTARY CLUB PROJECT

Congratulation to the members  the Rotary Club of Kurrajong North Richmond who worked  about two weeks ago to demolish and remove the old Rotary sign on Rotary Lookout Bellbird Hill Reserve Kurrajong Heights and to assist Brad and Melinda from Outback Signs to install the new sign. Plans were underway for a while to replace the old sign with a new sign to commemorate the Centenary of Rotary in Australia. Past President Mary Kinnon was able to eventually secure approval from Hawkesbury City Council on 30 July to allow for the works to proceed. The new sign was designed by inhouse Graphic Artist, Daniel Berrell and a quote for the sign was approved by the board which enabled the works to proceed without delay.

TIMOR LESTE UPDATE FROM LIBBY BLEAKLEY
On Tuesday 18 August 2020, our manager Dede da Costa and two members of our Centre (Paulo and Bento), caught the boat to Oecusse District with H.E Xanana Gusmao (Former President of East Timor) and his team. As our Patron, Xanana often frequents our Centre and was keen to help our staff with their outreach programs. Dede had a meeting with Xanana at his home prior to traveling to Oecusse . Xanana donated rice, food items, books and pens to go with our donations. The boat arrived at 5am on the Wednesday and Xanana’s bodyguards, police, media, military, Dede, Paulo and Bento loaded 15 boxes of Days for Girls sanitary kits, clothing, blankets, beanies and Xanana’s items onto trucks that Xanana had organized.

Why growing membership is so important

One of the most important things your club can do is nurture and sustainably grow your membership. Surveys have shown that prospective members are attracted to our clubs that offer them flexible formats. It’s also critical to encourage participation by offering people service projects that create lasting change in their communities. See some of the ways that clubs are being innovative and watch this video about the importance of providing a variety of formats for potential members.
LIFT THE LID HAT DAY

Every October, Australian Rotary Health encourages Rotary Clubs, businesses, and individuals to get involved in Hat Day as part of ‘Lift the Lid on Mental Illness’, our national fundraising and awareness campaign for mental health research.

We understand that this year the COVID-19 pandemic may present some obstacles, making it difficult to get involved in the same way as previous years. But we also believe this is an opportunity to put our creative thinking hats on!

It has been a tough year for everyone, so let’s get together (virtually), put on a silly hat, and do something important for mental health.
