District 9685 – A Global Grant That Keeps Moving

Rotary’s Mobile Clinic Changing Lives in India
Rotary’s impact does not end when a grant is closed, and the Rotary Mobile Clinic for Leprosy Care is a powerful reminder of what sustainable service looks like in action.
Completed in 2020 through a Rotary Foundation Global Grant (GG1982975), this project continues to deliver Disease Prevention and Treatment services to underserved rural communities in Uttar Pradesh, India. The fully equipped mobile clinic travels into villages where distance, poverty, and stigma often delay treatment for leprosy a disease that is entirely curable if detected early.
The project was inspired during the 2018–19 Rotary year when Haran Ramachandran OAM, a Rotarian in District 9685, visited a hospital operated by The Leprosy Mission India while attending a Rotary conference in Allahabad. Conversations with doctors and patients highlighted a simple truth: access to healthcare, not availability of medicine, was the most significant barrier.
Through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Allahabad Elite and the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville, and support from Districts 3120 and 9685, a mobile solution was created designed for long-term use, local ownership, and measurable outcomes.
Sustainability is clearly visible today. In December 2025, the Rotary-supported medical van enabled a medical and disability camp at The Leprosy Mission Hospital, Naini, providing assessments, rehabilitation support, caregiver training, and free transport for children from surrounding villages.
This is Rotary at its best: strategic, compassionate, and enduring.
Building on this success, planning is now underway for new Global Grant projects in Varanasi, Allahabad, and other parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Rotarians across District 9685 are invited to get involved.
